Greenwood Bowling Centre Offers New After School Program

The Greenwood Bowling Centre is a non-profit organization operating in the 14 Wing Military Base in Greenwood, N.S.

With the support of The Municipality of the County of Kings and the sponsorship of Heritage Canada and Sports Canada, we are very excited to introduce a new afterschool program designed to encourage youth between the age of 6 and 16 to participate in a fun and active lifestyle.

Learn to Bowl is a program originally designed by Bowl Canada for schools throughout North America to introduce the sport of 5-pin bowling in to their physical education curriculum. We have slightly modified this program so that it can be taught in its entirety within a bowling centre.

Upon completion of the 8 lesson course, students are recognized for their achievements with awards and are also rewarded with free bowling certificates and special discount rates for joining their local Youth Bowling league.

Please contact Leon Bullock at 765-1494 ext 5631 or gbcbowling@eastlink.ca for more information.

Christine Faour's Eat Where You Are

Over the past couple months I've had the opportunity to get to know local author Christine Faour. We've had a number of conversations and gotten together a couple of times but I've probably learned more about her by reading her recipe book.

It likely seems strange that I've learned about someone by reading their recipes but Christine's book "Eat Where You Are" is, as she calls it, a memoir in recipes.

The book is broken down into chapters which organize recipes, and the stories that go along with them, into the different areas and time periods of her life that have influenced her.

I haven't read every story yet but in the ones that I have Christine does a great job letting us into her life enough to know why this recipe belongs in the book.

One of her most famous recipes is her Divorce Fudge. I won't spoil the story by telling how the fudge was named, but I will let you know it is delicious and easy to make. The way my family has taken to it would make the book worth its price if this was the only recipe in it.

To find out more about her book and to order a copy for yourself, visit eatwhereyouare.ca.

2011 Apple Blossom Grand Street Parade

Saturday was almost a perfect day for the Grand Street Parade. It was not too hot, but it was warm and it didn't rain. The streets of Kentville were crowded with thousands of people there to see the Princesses and other floats / displays in the parade.

It took a lot longer than the children's parade video, but here are a couple videos from the 79th Apple Blossom Festival Grand Street Parade. The music playing is from the bands who were in the parade.

The video had to be broken down into two parts but they are both listed below.

Finally after having plans for a long time to post videos from around the Annapolis Valley, the first video was posted to YouTube.

It's almost the full 79th Apple Blossom Festival Children's Parade.

It's Apple Blossom Time

The 79th Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival has officially began. Last night the opening was held in Annapolis Royal and there are many more great events coming up this weekend.

This long running festival is great at promoting the agricultural industry here in the Valley while providing a family event that everyone can enjoy.

There are some of the usual mainstay events like the Grand Street Parade, the Childrens Parade, and the fireworks. This year there are new events and attractions that should be great successes.

Passport to the Valley will be held on Saturday, this will have all the communities in one place showcasing all the valley has to offer. People can get their passports marked at each place to win prizes.

Something new that that would be really cool to do would be to take one of the hellicopter rides leaving Memorial Park in Kentville throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. The cost is $55 per person but having taken a flight over the Valley in the fall I think this would be well worth the price to see the Annapolis Valley from that height this time of year.

In cooperation with Deep Roots Music there is a blues concert Saturday night featuring very talented artists Matt Anderson, The Hupman Brothers, and Jens Jeppesen.

Also some exciting news that just came out shortly ago is that some of the honourary parade marshals this year will be Sheri Elwood & Jason Preistley who are the creator & star of the show Call Me Fitz. This is a great show which was filmed in New Minas and other parts of the Valley.

All that said, the Apple Blossom Festival is one of my favourite times of the year. Not only is there lots going on but it always makes a great opportunity for family and friends to get together.

Oaklawn Farm Zoo in the Spring

Oaklawn Farm Zoo in Aylesford opens today (April 9, 2011) for the season. Spring time has to be about the best time to visit the zoo, even though each year we end up with a season pass and visit many times, early spring is always my favourite.

For regular visitors like my family one of the big reasons we like the spring visits so much is because it has been so long since we've last been. Our family is still young and growing and this year our son, will be extra excited. He is in an animal loving phase right now, where all his toys, books, movies need to be or involve some form of animal. He's so young that he won't really remember the zoo from last year, that will make this first visit almost like his first.

In the spring time the temperatures are still fairly cool, I find this helps the animals be a little more active than when the heat of summer arrives. Then they can sometimes be lazy and just lay around.

Each year our first few visits usually include some new cute baby animals being born at the zoo. The baby goats each year are always a favourite with everyone. Lots of times they will manage to get out of their fenced area and come right up to your feet to be fed corn. Their small and cute and right there for you to interact with, so it is always a big hit.

With the zoo being open seven days a week from 10:00am until dusk, it makes it easy to find a time to go. If you are able to go during the week days, because a lot of people are working, and their children are in school, you can sometimes pretty much have the whole place to yourself. This makes it especially fun if you are interested in visiting at feeding time. It varies thoughout the season but it is earlier in the spring than summer time. You are able to ask lots of questions and even get to help feed some of the animals.

Feeding Smokey the bear can be kind of daunting. He's so big and there is only a small fence separating the two of you when you go in to feed him. It's of course safe as Smokey is a pretty calm and laid back guy, but watching him take a mint out of someones mouth with his is pretty impressive. When he stands up you realize just how big he really is.

If you plan on visiting the zoo even a couple of times throughout the year it could likely be worth it for you to purchase a season pass. As of today the current prices are below.

Regular Admission:

Adults - $7.50
Seniors - $4.00
Students - $4.00
Children 3-12 - $3.00
Children under 3 - Free

Season Passes:

Single Adult - $25
Couple - $45
Family of 3 - $55
Family of 4 - $65
Family of 5 - $75
Family of 6 - $85
Family of 7+ - $95

You can find more information about the zoo at their website www.oaklawnfarmzoo.ca.
2011 Federal Election in the Annapolis Valley

On March 26th 2011 a Federal Election was called for May 2, 2011. It seems like just a few years ago we were going to the polls, I guess that's because we were. Some people have been complaining about another election, but this is part of Democracy and I'll take it over the alternative.

So lets get to the current candidates in the two ridings that make up the Annapolis Valley and where you can find more information about them and where they stand.

In West Nova we have:

Greg Kerr who is looking to be re-elected for the Conservatives. His website is www.gregkerr.ca, he is on Twitter at @gregkerrCPC and his Facebook page is www.facebook.com/votekerr.

Robert Thibault is running again for the Liberals. You can follow him along on his website www.robertthibault.ca and his Facebook page.

It appears George Barron will run for the NDP again in this election. You can find him on the NDP website.

Ross Johnson is running as the candidate for the Green Party. you can find him on the Green Party website.

In Kings--Hants we have:

Scott Brison who is trying to keep his seat for the Liberals can be found on his website www.votebrison.ca, on Twitter @scottbrison, and on his Facebook page.

For the Conservatives David Morse is looking to his experience in Provincial politics to the Federal level. You can find him at his site www.davidmorse.ca on Twitter @David_Morse.

The NDP candidate is Mark Rogers. You can follow him at his website www.markrogers.ca, on Twitter @KingsHantsNDP and his Facebook page.

For the Green Party Sheila Richardson has been nominated as the candidate. She can be found at her website www.kingshantsgreens.com, on her Facebook page, and on Twitter @KingsHantsGreen.

Cheap Swimming Party in March

We have some great resources and facilities here in the Annapolis Valley and many people might not know about some of them. Yesterday we celebrated my youngest daughters birthday party. She had decided some time ago that she wanted to go swimming for her birthday. We ended up renting two facilities which are side by side and had a great party.

The main thing is obviously the swimming. Luckily she decided early enough that we were able to book the pool at the the Waterville Youth Correctional Centre. Now that might sound like a weird place to hold a kids birthday party, but Kings County and the facility have a great working releationship. The County uses the pool area for swim lessons and public swims. As the pool is only used some of the time it makes sense to allow the County to make use of it while it is available.

The entry into the pool is right in the main entrance so you don't even really enter the correctional centre at all. There are basically three door ways that take you to the pool, the male change rooms, the female change rooms, and a door to a balcony that looks down over the pool area.

I wasn't able to find it anywhere on the County website, but you can also rent the pool through them for certain times. We had it booked from 4:30 to 6:00 pm on Saturday afternoon and there was another party that came in right behind us.

Now because the main purpose for the pool isn't public use there is no area that you are able to do things like have birthday cake or open presents. Thankfully right across the street is the Waterville fire hall. They have rooms that are available for anyone to rent. So we booked one of the smaller rooms for an hour before the pool. We had a fair number of people and the room held us nicely. The kids were able to run around a bit, have some snacks, eat cake and open presents. When we were done we just walked across the road and into the pool, it really worked out great.

When we were first looking at doing this for a party I was thinking that the cost could end up being fairly high, seeing as we had to rent to different places. However this was likely one of the cheapest parties we've thrown for our kids. The cost of the pool was only $35, this is for an hour and a half of pool time and they provide the life guard. The room at the fire hall was only $25 for an hour. So in total we only spent $55 and could have accomodated many more kids than we had attend.

For more information on the swimming programs offered by the Kings County at the correctional centre you can visit their site at http://www.county.kings.ns.ca/common/pars/swim.asp

If you are interested renting the facilities at the Waterville fire hall you can visit their site at http://watervilledistrictfire.ca/index.php?/Static-Content/facility-information.html

Eric Smith Should Resign

Both the Chronicle Herald and the Kings County Register/Advertiser had articles today about Eric Smith the Kings County Councillor caught drinking and driving twice in the past few years. In both cases the only time he was caught was because he was involved in single vehicle accidents, so it is hard to guess how many more times he has actually been behind the wheel while drunk.

This isn't anything new, it's an unfortunate fact that there are people out there who feel it is OK to drink and drive. It's also not new for politicians. In 2007 Ernie Fage, at the time a Nova Scotia Cabinet Minister, had an accident after driving drunk. There are many more examples of politicians driving while under the influence.

While no one should drive when drinking it is especially gross when someone elected by the public, to serve the public, does something like this. Their job is to look out for the public's interest. They are doing the exact opposite of that when they put people's lives and even property at risk.

Thankfully in both of Mr. Smith's accidents no one was injured. Property was damaged though and police / fire departments had to dedicate their time and energy to investigate and take care of these accidents. Now the justice system is looking after the case, it is currently postponed so will be back in court again later this year. All these things are needlessly costing the people who elected him money.

Lamentably there are no laws in place that force someone in this position to resign from their elected job. Some may think that he deserves the opportunity to get help with his condition, which of course he does and he should get that help. He should not however remain a public servant when he inexcusably breaks the law and puts people's lives in danger. He should do the right thing by resigning and getting the help he needs.

Happy New Year 2011

Happy New Year! 2010 was a good year and I’m hoping that 2011 ends up being even better. I wish everyone the best in this coming year.

Today I started thinking back on 2010 and have come up with a few of the top news stories which related to the Annapolis Valley. Some of them are good news for the region while others were not so great.

One story which gathered national attention was the hate crime story in Windsor. In February 2010 Justin and Nathan Rehberg committed a hate crime by burning a cross on the lawn of Shayne Howe and Michelle Lyon with a noose attached to it. This was the first time in Canada that a cross burning was decidedly a hate crime.

On a more pleasant note, in April Lawrencetown made it to the top five communities in the Kraft Hockeyville 2010 challenge. This gave the Lawrencetown Exhibition Youth Arena $25,000 for upgrades and renovations.

In the summer months Bob Gee who runs Mader’s Tobacco shop in Kentville won a victory in his long going battle over displaying tobacco products in his store. Since 2007 he has been fighting to be allowed to continue showing these products. It was decided that the law which he is accused of breaking does infringe on his freedom of expression. This battle is long from over as the province intends on showing these laws are for the greater good of the population.

We’ve seen a number of storms this year in the Annapolis Valley. Hurricane Earl which came through near the first of September had farmers very worried about their crops. Luckily the storm didn’t do as much damage as expected after weakening, and the crops were not badly damaged. More recently in December we had a wild wind storm which caused lots of damage and left people without power for days.

In October the long awaited Berwick Apple Dome, officially The Kings Mutual Century Centre, opened to the public. The facility which was dreamed of and planned for around ten years has phase one completed and held a three day opening celebration.

In the beginning of December a national story came about and ended up focusing on our region. The pays of Native Band Councils were revealed with some of the highest salaries coming from the Glooscap First Nation with 300 members. Chief Shirley Clarke defends her and the councilor’s salaries. The highest paid in the country was found to have most his almost million dollar reported salary from contract work he was awarded to perform within the community.

The final story is unfortunately not a new one for the Valley as more jobs losses have been announced. Like other similar processing plants Larsens in Berwick has announced it will be closing in April. It has previously reduced the tasks which took place at the plant and now will be moving all production elsewhere. Also in the jobs leaving Convergys the call centre in Cornwallis will be closing its centre in March. They have stated that some employees will be able to continue working as a work at home agent, but most of the jobs are expected to be moved over seas.

So those are some of the top news stories which I recall from 2010 in the Annapolis Valley. If you feel I’ve missed any that were big deals please post them in the comment section and have a great 2011.

Damaging December Wind Storm

Everyone I've spoken with says that the storm that hit the Annapolis Valley Monday night (December 13) was some of the strongest winds they could remember. All were thankful for the warmer than seasonal temperatures which kept the precipitation to rain and not snow.

The blew over so many trees, it ripped shingles off roofs, and in some cases took the whole roof off of buildings. The damage of trees falling onto homes, cars and other property has caused massive damage. One of my first experiences with the Valley was at the Berwick United Church Campground. They have beautiful grounds with many trees and buildings. Over half the buildings were damaged due to the storm and they have lost a lot of trees.

The storm knocked out power to over 80,000 customers and just as of earlier today the 17th the Nova Scotia Power website is showing all outages finally clear. Although it is horrible to be without electricity I think that Nova Scotia Power did a pretty good job at keeping the public informed on where they stood in the repair process. Their website was constantly updated, and they have a good mobile website for people who have to access it via their phone. They even setup an automated call to inform me that the outage in my area was fixed so if I still had problems to call them because it was something specific to our home.

To me one of the most important things in a situation like this is keeping people informed. Even though it does little to change the length of time you are without services it helps people feel better that they know progress is being made. Even if estimated times of repair change, at least they have a rough idea of when they might have service back.

At my home we were lucky, we had power back sometime Tuesday morning, we didn't even lose our milk and the house never got too cold. Thousands of people were not so lucky. When we did get our power back however we didn't have any of our services from EastLink. This included our phone, internet and cable. Again this is understandable there was lots of damage and it takes time to repair. The frustrating part was their lack of communication and miscommunication that took place. Every contact I had with them, and there was quite a few, left me frustrated and with a different story than before.

EastLink is in severe need of working on first their internal communication skills. The front end people have no idea what is going on. My first few calls I hung up after hearing their recorded message. After that I waited to talk to a person to get a better estimate of how long things would be out. The stories ranged from all Nova Scotia Powers problem. Once they had power restored I would have service. Then fibre optic cables were damaged and that would take a long time to repair. Then I wasn't part of an outage, then I was. Then there was no outage in my area of the Valley even though their recorded message just said there was.

It's obvious that power is more essential than phone, cable and internet, but for many people the phone may be their only way to contact emergency services if something happened, and the internet is essential to lots of people who earn their living online. If Nova Scotia Power can provide the types of updates they do, than companies like EastLink must be able to as well.

Call Me Fitz Red Carpet Premiere in Wolfville

Wolfville was full of the stars and producers of the show which was filmed in New Minas last year.

Call Me Fitz is a comedy about a used car salesman Richard Fitzpatrick played by Jason Priestley. It is certainly a different role than his character on 90210 and not meant for family night TV, but mature viewers will likely find the show very funny.

Fitz who seems to care about no one except himself ends up having Larry, played by Ernie Grunwald, claiming to be his conscience. Larry becomes part owner of Fitzpatrick Motors and tries to help the unwilling Fitz straighten his life out.

It was almost surreal to be in the theatre and able to watch the first two episodes with all the cast and to hear from the producers and creators of the show. Matt Dusk, who provides the soundtrack for the show, started off the event with a live performance of a couple of the songs from the show.

Tracy Dawson who plays Fitz’s sister Meghan, Peter MacNeill who plays their father Ken, Donavon Stinson who plays Josh, Gillian Ferrier who plays Kara were all on the red carpet for the premiere. At some point in the night I’m certain I heard each one of them say how glad they were to be back in the Annapolis Valley and to be shooting the second season here.

Even though the show itself might not be something everyone will watch, from all the reviews and from what I’ve seen, the show has the potential to be a big success and that can only be a good thing for the Valley.

Afternoon at the Annapolis Valley Exhibition

Although I'd always heard how good the Annapolis Valley Exhibition was, this was the first year that I've made it down to check it out myself. We had family visiting from away and thought it would be an excellent way to spend an afternoon with them, we were right.

It was a pretty hot day in Lawrencetown, but that didn't stop anyone from enjoying everything that was going on. There were also lots of shady areas which were much cooler than out in the direct sun.

Initially I thought we might have a hard time getting the kids to do anything else other than the rides. We started with them, but it wasn't long before they were anxious to go and see the rest of what was going on.

We started at the main ring where we saw the Men's Belgian Cart Class, the horses and carts were very well presented. Directly over from the main ring, there were horse pulls going on. We moved over there and watched these amazingly strong animals pulling huge amounts of weight.

All the barns were filled with different types of livestock. I couldn't get over the variety of animals which were there. Some of the favourites were the miniature horses, miniature donkeys, the wolves, and of course the rabbits. There were also oxen, cattle, goats, poultry, and all sorts of breeds of horses.

One of the goals of the Valley Ex being to promote agriculture in the youth, and I believe they are doing a great job at this. There were lots of youth there with their animals and others watching the events. My kids have wanted bunnies for a while now and we've been discussing that possibility, now they really want some and to bring them next year.

Busy Weekend in the Annapolis Valley

This weekend was a very busy one in the Annapolis Valley. There were so many events going on all over that it made it difficult to choose which things to go to.

Saturday we took it pretty easy and went to help celebrate New Minas Days for a little while. The kids loved jumping around all the inflatable bouncers which were setup. There was also a huge soap/water slide setup down the side of a hill in Lockhart Ryan Park. People of all ages were trying to cool off a little by flying down the slippery black plastic slide. The whole time there was live musical entertainment being played.

Sunday we had a harder time deciding what to do so we did lots. We started the morning out at the Trecothic Creek & Windsor Railway. The members there are so great and work so hard to share their miniature locomotives. Everyone enjoyed riding around the grounds on these impressive machines.

After spending some time there we headed to the Grand-Pre National Historic Site where they were celebrating the Acadian National Holiday. Every time we visit the grounds I forget at how amazing they are. The gardens, the weeping willows, and the ponds make for wonderful scenery while visiting.

We caught the blacksmith shop open for the first time today as well. They were putting on a demonstration by making hooks. I think the kids were more amazed at the large bellows used to stoke the fire then they were with the glowing metal being shaped by hammering it on an anvil.

Our next stop was to Noggins Corner Farm where they were participating in Select Nova Scotia’s IncrEdible picnic. There were so many vendors setup with fresh food all from the local area.

Noggins has such a great setup that I think we could stay there all day and not be bored. The younger kids absolutely love using the manual hand pumps push ducks down a river of water, and I lost count at how many times they went down the big tube slides. We didn’t end up doing the corn maze, but the kids ran through a hay bale maze, and the rope maze.

While we were there I had an enjoyable conversation with a gentleman from Falmouth. We both agreed that we are lucky to live in the Annapolis Valley.

Official Opening of Miner Marsh

Miner Marsh was officially opened tonight, August 12, 2010. The piece of land was purchased by Ducks Unlimited Canada in 1997 and the plans for the park have been in the works since around 2004.

The property is right downtown Kentville behind the municipal building and features 1.5 km of trials around the wetlands. One of the main landmarks in the Park is a bridge which was put in place over the Cornwallis River.

Along the trails there are benches and picnic tables to stop along the way and enjoy the scenery which is beautiful.

The plans for the park will make the it a recreational area, but also an educational tool. With schools taking trips to learn about the wildlife and the importance of preserving these sorts of habitats. It will also be used by groups like Scouts.

Tonight was my first visit to the park and I'm quite impressed with the area and how close it is to the downtown area. It will make a great area for people to take a walk on their lunch break or any time.

Libraries Offering Digital Downloads

It's been years since I've been to the library to actually borrow a book, and after what I discovered today it may be even longer.

The Annapolis Valley Libraries are now offering digital downloads for library members. They have hundreds of ebooks and audio books that you can borrow right from your computer. They aren't just old books either. One book I've been meaning to read, because of all the good things I've heard about it, is Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, they just happened to have an audio book version available, so I choose to download it.

You are required to download software to hear the audio books but they offer it for many systems. I downloaded it for Windows and for my iPhone. Unfortunately the iPhone version doesn't play WMA format audio books, which is what I wanted to listen to. Once it was installed the software had to do an update to my Windows Media Player, but after that I was able to listen to the audio book no problem.

Libraries have really changed over the past number of years. Most now offer computers which you can book to use the internet, and many even offer wireless internet so you can bring your own devices. With now offering services like digital media downloads, libraries are really showing they are looking to the future so they will still be able to meet the needs of their members for years to come.

The New OurValley.ca

Finally after a long time and a lot of work the new version of OurValley.ca is here. This is certainly more than just a new look for the website, it’s really a new beginning.

It's still the same team with the same goal in mind, to bring all the great things the Annapolis Valley has to offer together, and make it easy for everyone to find. This version is going to make it easier to do just that. From events, jobs, businesses, and attractions it can all be found right here.

The main new features of the site are a better events section, a better classifieds section, and a new business directory. The business directory is going to be a great resource to find information about Annapolis Valley businesses.

Up until now Our Valley has always been a part time venture and was a secondary priority. Now it takes the front seat. There will be more updates and there will be more information being added all the time. For a long time we’ve had a great number of visitors come to the site daily, but with these changes and the updates it will really make Our Valley the best online resources for people looking for information about the Annapolis Valley.

So thanks for coming and checking out the new site I hope you will find it useful. If there is anything you think should be added, or anything you think that would make the site better, please fill out the contact form to let us know.

Geocaching in the Annapolis Valley

Recently my family and I have been introduced to a new hobby, geocaching. Not that it’s a new idea, because it’s been around for quite a while, just new to us.

When asked to go geocaching I wasn’t sure what to expect as I wasn’t exactly sure what it was. I had heard the term, but never really looked into what it was or what it involved. After talking to other people about it I realize I wasn’t alone and that there are more people who aren’t sure of what geocaching is.

I won’t pretend I’m anywhere close to an expert, as we’ve only gone a couple times, but I’ll try to explain the basics and hopefully get some other people interested and show you where to find out more.

Geocaching is described as a modern day style treasure hunt. It is a great way to combine technology while still getting out enjoying nature. People all over the world have hidden what are called geocaches. Typically a container of some sort filled with a treasure. There is usually a log book for anyone who finds the cache to sign, and there are sometimes other little treasures which you can take and leave something in its place.

Once the geocache is hidden the latitude and longitude are captured using a GPS device and put online so people can find them. We’ve been using a site called geocaching.com. You can sign up for a free account and search for geocaches to find. Once you find one you input the coordinates into your GPS device and use it to make your way to the treasure.

Our friends have a hiking GPS device which works great, but instead of us going out and buying a new device we tried it out with my iPhone. When you find a cache on geocaching.com it has a link to driving directions which opens up Google Maps on the iPhone. You can then use it’s GPS to guide you to the destination.

After we tried it a couple times we downloaded the iPhone app offered by geocaching.com. This gives an easy to use way of finding caches on the go.

There are literally hundreds of geocaches hidden throughout the Annapolis Valley, and it is a fun way to get out and see some of the beautiful sites we have to offer. There are many along well known nature and hiking trails so we find it works well as an added bonus for the kids. It gives them something to look forward to while out on the trail.

Have a look at this geocache map on geocaching.com where it shows just some of the caches hidden throughout the Valley.

Big Plans For 2010

We are now a week into 2010 and for me it is a very exiting year. For the last four years I've been taking Computer Science at Acadia University which has meant that this website has been a "spare time" project for me. That was the original plan was that this site and the web design service would always be part time. However my wife and I have decided that come graduation in May 2010 Our Valley will become a full time venture. This is exciting and scary at the same time but it will work.

What can you expect to see? Over the next few months expect to see some major changes coming to this website. There will be a redesign of the website, it will still be a simple, clean site which will be easy to make your way around, but there will be much more information being added to it regularily.

Of course I will always be offering other services such as web design / programming and various other services.

As always if there is anything you would like to see on the site, or any othe feedback at all, please let me know through the contact link at the top of the page.

64th Berwick Gala Days

Especially for school aged children the Labour Day weekend is an end to summer, and each year since 1945 Berwick helps make that thought a little more bearable by celebrating Gala Days.

This year the 64th Berwick Gala Days celebration lasts from Thursday through to Monday with great events each day. Thursday and Friday left the events till the evening, but starting Saturday the events go on from morning till night.

Besides some of the ongoing events such as the Bounce Kingdom and Mainland Amusement area setup there are lots of other events as well.

Spending a Hot Day in Windsor

Yesterday, August 16, 2009, was a very hot day here in the Annapolis Valley. The temperature itself was not so bad, hovering right around 30 degrees, but with the humidex it made it feel like 39 degrees.

Most of us promise all winter that when the summer gets here we won't complain about the heat, so we won't complain. Instead embrace the heat and find something fun to do to cool down.

Nova Scotia has many beaches and they are a great way to spend a hot day. You can find many of the Annapolis Valley Beaches at nsbeaches.com.

Another fun thing to do is to visit the Windsor Playland Park. They have a water slide and pool that make it a great way to stay cool.

While in Windsor and if it happens to be a day they are open the Trecothic Creek & Windsor Railway offers a dry way to stay pretty cool. There is lots of shade at the Railway, and riding on the trains keeps a nice breeze blowing on you, even if mother nature isn't providing one.

Hantsport Nova Scotia Now Wireless

Happy Canada Day!

Starting Canada Day 2009 Hantsport Nova Scotia will be offering free wireless internet to their residents and visitors. So far they seem to be the first town in Nova Scotia to offer this service. It would be great if this was a trend that catches on throughout the Valley. The first thought that came to mind when the Valley Community Fibre Network came online, was that it could provide a great opportunity to offer this type of wireless service.

The official launch of this service is timed to go along with Hantport's Canada Day celebration. Each year they have events going all day for the whole family to enjoy. Events started at 7:30am with a pancake breakfast and go all the way until 10:00pm with fireworks.

The parade starts at 1:00pm and is one of the best parades in the Annapolis Valley each year. After the parade you can visit the bounce castles and other activities which will be setup for the children, or take in some of the entertainment which will be taking place.

So if you are going to in or near the Annapolis Valley bring your family and wireless devices and come celebrate Canada Day in Hantsport.

2009 Nova Scotia Election The Results Are In

It looks as though Nova Scotia will make it a full term without another election. The NDP was able to come in with a majority government and sent the PC party into third place.

Here in the Annapolis Valley the majority of the ridings ending up staying the same, but the two ridings that did change went from PC to the NDP.

In Digby-Annapolis Liberal Harold (Jr) Theriault was able to keep his seat. Moving up the Valley to the Annapolis riding the Liberal party leader Stephen McNeil will stay as one of the eleven Liberal MLA's elected. Leo Glavine the Liberal incumbent of Kings West was also able to stay put.

The only PC seat that remained the same out of the six electoral districts in the Annapolis Valley was Hants West. There Chuck Porter will remain as the only PC in the Valley and only one of ten in Nova Scotia.

Both Kings North and Kings South saw long time PC seats change over to the NDP. Across Nova Scotia they were able to win 31 seats which include Jim Morton who came out on over the prominent Mark Parent and Ramona Jennex defeated David Morse. Both Parent and Morse were previous Ministers of the PC Cabinet.

The Green party who did end up having a candidate run in every riding in the Valley was unable to pick up enough votes to win a seat here or anywhere in Nova Scotia.

77th Apple Blossom Festival Update

The 77th Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival is now well underway. The events seem to be going off as planned and everyone appears to be having a good time. Most of the blossoms have now gone from the main festival areas, but in some outer areas there should still be some blossoms for people wanting to see the beauty, or get pictures.

This year's children's parade seemed especially well attended, both by spectators and participants. There are not as many people who watch this as there is for the bigger parade later in the afternoon, but it makes it easier to get to and find a good spot. The children always seem to have a good time showing off their creative floats and cute outfits.

For a little while during the wait for the Grand Street Parade to begin, it looked and felt like the weather might not cooperate, but save a few sprinkles the rain held off until the very end. Princess Kentville, Lindsay Margaret Pearl, who was crowned the 77th Queen Annapolisa the night before was leading the Grand Street Parade through Kentville.

Unlike some previous years, the vast majority of the entrants were well crafted and entertaining, instead of simply being moving advertisements or fire trucks blowing their sirens and horns. This certainly makes for a much more enjoyable parade as anyone there could tell by watching the happy crowds.

The Scotian Gold Family Fun Day for the Apple Blossom Festival looked to be a huge success. There were huge crowds of people and lots of activities to keep the children going. The beautiful weather certainly played a part in getting people out to the event. The only downfall might have been that it was so busy the line ups for the activites ended up being quite long.

During the day there was live music, a petting zoo, wagon and pony rides, as well as bounce castles for the kids. Near the beginning of the event there was a visit from the Royal Party. Kate Peardon from K-Rock 89.3 joked that they were going to send the Princesses down the huge bounce castle slide, but they surprised here when the insisted they actually do it.

The Apple Blossoms Have Arrived

It is almost Apple Blossom Festival here in the Annapolis Valley, and in lots of places the apple blossoms are already here. The official opening to this year's Apple Blossom Festival is on the 28th of May and will run through until June 1st, but really events and activities started even earlier.

With the apple trees blooming already we should still have some blossoms around for the festival. Different apple varieties bloom at different times. Some of the newer varieties tend to bloom later than older varieties such as Macintoshes or Gravenstien.

As of today the weather for the big Apple Blossom events does not look the most promising. Friday and Saturday both call for showers, with Sunday looking cloudy. Luckily for us the weather in the Valley is just as unpredictable as the rest of Nova Scotia. Everything is far enough away that the forecast still has a good chance of changing. Rain or not the parades will go on as they have in some recent rainy years, and no matter what the weather, the crowds always show up because they know it will be well worth it.

100 Years of Flight in Canada

This year marks the 100 year anniversary of powered flight in Canada. It was in February 1909 when the Silver Dart was first flown in Nova Scotia.

In celebration of this huge achievement 2009 is filled with events to commemorate the historic moment. 14 Wing Greenwood has been holding events all year. You can view their calendar of events at www.greenwood100years.com.

Today May 20, 2009 there was a family day held that involved an aerial display by Canada's Snow Birds and a CF-18 Hornet. Besides the mini air show there was also other aircraft on display interactive things such as a cockpit simulator.

Apple Dome Finally Getting Started

For somewhere around eight years volunteers have been planning and preparing for today. Rodney MacDonald was in Berwick today to start the ground breaking celebration for the Kings Mutual Century Centre, better known as the Apple Dome.

Berwick's current arena is over 50 years old so the original plan was to simply replace it. But since then it has grown to become a multi stage project which will include much more than just a rink. Some of the other facilities which will be added are a library, walking track, and swimming pool. The estimated date of completion for the first phase is September 2010.

Berwick has quite an active recreation department so the Apple Dome will certainly be well used in that respect. But even if it is the mind you are trying to keep active the library will be there as well. The current library, although it's been a number of years, was in desperate need of a new home as of my last visit.

Annapolis Valley Online Flyers

One of the features that is being worked on is a section that will show available specials or sales happening at Valley businesses.

For the first part of this project there is now a page which lists many of the businesses in the Annapolis Valley who have online flyers. So if you want to check out the latest deals at the major grocery stores like Sobeys or Superstore. Or find out what good deals Walmart currently has on. Then take a look at the Annapolis Valley Online Flyers page.

If you happen to think of any flyers we have missed that are available online please let us know.

Non Traditional Valley Meat Producers

A couple of days ago I wrote about the Apple Industry and how, with government help, they were researching, and proactively trying to change things around to ensure they are still an active industry in the future. Included in that article was how I would like to see the same with other industries such as the Pork Industry.

Well, there are meat producers in the Annapolis Valley who are doing just that. Meadowbrook Meat Market just outside of Berwick has become the only producer of Omega 3 enriched pork, and they sell a lot of their product in their own meat market.

As many would know at this point Omega 3 is a fatty acid which has many health benefits and can be found in things like fish oil and flax seed. Having a good source of Omega 3 in your diet and is being recommended by many health professionals.

Meadowbrook Meat Market raises their animals on Omega 3 enriched feed which in return ends up in the meat they produce and sell.

Another example is Oulton's Farm outside of Windsor. They still produce a number of traditional livestock such as beef and pork. However, they have also moved on to include more exotic type animals as well.

Starting out with Quail they have also added Yak, wild boar, and other uncommon items. In addition to having these different animals they also are a free range farm. Allowing the animals to roam as they desire.

Many restaurants are attracted to the Oulton's product because they are able to offer unique local items from a known quality source.

These are just two examples of great foresight by farmers in our Valley. They are assuring that they stay ahead and offer something that will make them stand out during this troubling time and going forward.

Annapolis Valley School Board Budget

In a recent article from The Chronicle Herald, the new superintendent Margo Tait admits that they may have to look at staff cuts in the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board.

The school board has already made cuts to programs basically as far as they can. The superintendent states that without at least a 4.5% increase from the Provincial Government they will not be able to keep all the programs that have been offered.

The programs that will suffer most will end up being Music, Physical Education, and Special Education. Also in jeopardy are French Immersion programs throughout Valley Schools. Facebook has seen groups setup rallying to help save the program.

Part of the issues for the School Board, is that the Provincial Budget is not due to come out after their teaching assignments need to be made. This puts them in a very awkward spot. If a budget does not get brought down before the beginning of May, they will be making staff assignments not knowing how much of a Provincial contribution they will be receiving.

Obviously the majority of the World is going through a rough economic time right now so budgets are tight. But here in Nova Scotia our Premier Rodney MacDonald has already hinted that he will run a deficit budget if need be. If there is already going to be a deficit why not put some of that money into our education system.

In this hard economic situation we can not forget about education. In fact in my mind I would say it should become even more of a priority in these times. Governments everywhere are looking at putting more money into infrastructure to help create jobs. Why not put money into keeping jobs that will truly help our future generations.

Apple Industry Gets Funding

Apples are one of the Annapolis Valley's claim to fame. Yesterday, February 19, 2009, Agriculture Canada announced that the apple industry was going to receive some vital funding to help research new apple varieties.

Over the past few years the Honey Crisp variety has helped the apple industry in our region. Apple growers don't expect that the demand for these apples will be as high as it has been as more and more become available.

To help keep the momentum going $218 000 will be used for researching other varieties for the area. Researchers will take a number varieties and either plant new trees, or graft these varieties to existing trees.

It is good to see this proactive approach to ensure that one of our main industries is able to continue to remain viable. Hopefully it is not too late for our pork industry, which has been having a hard time as of late.

EKCC Best of Kings

Last night, February 18, 2009, the Eastern Kings Chamber of Commerce hosted their annual Best of Kings awards celebration. For these awards local businesses are nominated and then voted on in a wide range of categories.

In total there are 25 categories and the top three nominations from each are chosen to be voted on. This year there were over 13000 votes placed.

The award winner for Best Media was a newcomer to the Valley. K-Rock 89.3 beat out Magic 94.9 and Transcontinental. This helps strengthen a belief I have had for some time, that us Valley residence were wanting a fresh new option to choose from.

In 2006 when The Valley Today started publishing local evening paper just for the Annapolis Valley, I thought we were going to get that new voice. However, with newspapers everywhere having a hard time staying viable, it only took a quick few months before this paper had to stop production.

K-Rock 89.3 certainly seems to be that new voice, and although some people speculated that satellite radio was going to do away with the traditional radio stations, Newcap seems to be very strong, and I think people will always want to get their local news and forecast, so local radio stations will be around for a while yet.

Listed below are the other winners in their categories from the 2009 Best of Kings Awards.

OurValley.ca and Social Media

Social Media is not new anymore but it's something that I haven't played with a lot. For a while now I've had a Facebook group setup at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=56254605399, but I've not done a lot with it yet.

For some time I've seen the value in Facebook when it comes to personal uses, as well as using it to promote and inform people about business ventures.

This brings me to another huge Social Media site, Twitter. I've known about Twitter for a long time now and had the main idea on how it worked. Honestly I thought the whole idea was pretty foolish. Constantly making mini posts that can not be more than 140 characters.

For the past couple days I've put away my preconceived notions and gave it a try. So far I've been happily surprised. It is pretty fun, and I can now certainly see the potential it has as a tool to reach a great number of people.

So if you are so inclined you can follow me on Twitter

Grand Pre World Heritage Site Bid

The Premier, Rodney MacDonald, was in Grand Pre today (February 16th 2009) to announce funding to help Grand Pre become a World Heritage Site. Nova Scotia already has two of these sites in Lunenburg and the Joggins Fossil Cliffs.

Those of us who live in the Valley, and those who have visited, already know what a great place it is. This would be an opportunity to reach many more people and let them know about the unique history.

With the two existing World Heritage sites the designation has done a lot to promote the communities as tourist destinations. So it stands to reason that if Grand Pre is successful it will be one more selling point to bring people to our beautiful Annapolis Valley.

Annapolis Valley in the Winter

The Annapolis Valley is known for its beauty and activities in the spring, summer, and especially autumn. But winter in the Valley has much to offer as well.

For skiing or snowboard enthusiasts, Windsor has Martock which offers some of the best skiing in Atlantic Canada. Their 600 foot mountain is open from early December to late March.

Heading to the rink is a tradition for many families. But even if you aren’t a hockey family, the open skate times which many of the Annapolis Valley Arenas offer make a great way to break up a winter’s day.

The Sheffield Mills Eagle Watch grows in popularity each year. The main attraction is the hundreds of Bald Eagles which can be seen around the Sheffield Mills area, near Canning. The community has turned the last two weekends of January into a festival. They have number of events and activities at the Sheffield Mills community hall.

Another fun attraction for winter fun is New Ross Farm. Although it is not in the Valley it is only a short drive and is a great afternoon for the whole family. They are open Wednesday to Sunday in the winter and offer things such as sleigh rides on the weekends. They also have demonstrations, such as snow shoe, and toboggan making.

Annapolis Valley Holiday Celebrations

Each year the Annapolis Valley celebrates the Holiday's with many traditional events. Each community puts on their own series of annual events. Beginning mid November through to the New Year you can celebrate in a number of ways.

New Minas sets a new tradition this year with their "Celebration of Lights 2008". They will be hosting an evening parade of lights on November 22nd at 6:00pm followed by a spectacular fireworks display at the Lockhart & Ryan Memorial Park at 8:30pm. Due to bad weather during the original scheduled time, the parade of lights will now be held on November 29 starting at 5:00pm. The new date for the fireworks will be set later on, a tentative date will be December 3. Wondering how to occupy your family before the fireworks begin? Come visit Santa at the County Fair Mall once the parade is finished. There will be lots of tasty refreshments available at Centre Court.

Wolfville will be hosting their 34th Annual Acadia Christmas Craft Expo from November 21 - November 23rd. This event is one of the oldest events of its kind in Atlantic Canada. This year there will be over 150 artisians and craftspeople creating a very unique marketplace. This is hosted at the Acadia Arena in Wolfville.

On November 27th you can join the towns' people of Kentville as they gather for their annual Torchlight Parade and Christmas party. The lights go on at 7pm sharp! A new tradition begins on Saturday November 29th at 6:30pm with the Santa Claus Parade. It is sure to be a magical event of lights!
2008 Election Update

The 2008 Election is now over. October 14th saw Steven Harper and his Conservative Party win another minority government. They did manage to pick up a few more seats with one of those being West Nova here in the Annapolis Valley.

In Nova Scotia as a whole, all the seats remained the same except for West Nova. Here Greg Kerr received slightly over 1000 more votes than incumbent Robert Thibault.

Despite efforts, such as the D250 celebrations, which were trying to increase voter turnout, the National turnout was only 59.1%. Nova Scotia was slightly higher with 60.7%. The West Nova district was slightly higher again with a turnout rate of 62.8%. In Kings--Hants the turnout rate was lower than even the National rate at 58.9%.

Federal Election 2008

On October 14, 2008 Canada will be holding its 40th general election. Here in the Annapolis Valley we have two Federal ridings: West Nova and Kings-Hants.

Kings-Hants covers all of Hants County and from Grand Pre to Waterville in Kings County. Currently the Member of Parliament is the Liberal Representative Scott Brison.

West Nova makes up the area from Berwick to Yarmouth. West Nova also has a Liberal MP Robert Thibault.

Both Liberal MP's will be the Candidate for their ridings once again. The other two big Parties, the Conservatives and NDP, each have their Candidates selected for our ridings.

For the Conservatives Rosemary Segado is the Candidate for Kings-Hants, and Greg Kerr is running in West Nova. Greg Kerr also ran in this riding in the last election and was under 600 votes from Robert Thibault. Rosemary Segado is a new candidate in this election.

The NDP are running new Candidates in both ridings. George Barron is running in West Nova, and Carol Harris in Kings-Hants.

Acadia Students Ignore Warnings

For a long time Students have been getting warnings from both RCMP as well as from peers within the Acadia Student Unions to calm down and be good neighbours. However there are still some students who are ignoring these warnings and causing mischief and disturbances throughout the community.

The RCMP are still getting complaints and the majority seem to be regarding intoxicated students being loud and disruptive. There have also been other complaints about pranks and property damage. Due to students not listening to the ample warnings they have received there will be few warnings given out now. Instead violators will be handed a fine to pay, this could make a night of fun quite expensive.

While it is easy to paint all University students with the same brush, we should remember that not all students have this bad behaviour. The majority of students are at Acadia to learn and understand that even though partying and fun are parts of University life, there are appropriate ways to do these things will still getting a quality education and being a good neighbour to the community.

Valley Community Fibre Network

In 2005 the Valley Community Fibre Network was started with the goal to connect communities and help businesses in the Valley succeed by having the technological infrastructure needed. The project involves having a 186 km fibre optic network which connects Middleton to Halifax, as well as the other partners which are in between.

After a huge amount of work and testing, this network is now finished and ready to accept commercial customers. The VCFN project is a great example of communities working together to bring great benefits to the businesses and residents of the Valley.

Having this type of network infrastructure will give participants a much faster way to transmit large amounts of data. It will also be a great selling feature to bring new businesses to the Annapolis Valley, knowing they will have access to this high speed global connection.

Annapolis Royal Wins Challenge

Since 1995, Communities in Bloom has been challenging communities across the country to be environmentally friendly, show their community pride, and keep their communities beautiful. The non-profit organizations slogan is "People, plants and pride ... growing together". Each participating community is evaluated on a number of categories which all relate back to the slogan and goals of the program.

This year, 2008, Annapolis Royal has won the International Challenge in the small category. They were competing against other communities which were previous winners in their countries respective challenges. The other participants in this category were Aughrim Ireland, Grouville England, Olds Alberta, St. Clairsville Ohio, and Trail British Columbia.

Annapolis Royal held many weekly awards for home owners, business owners, and organizations leading up to the judging, to get the whole community involved and aware of the programs goals. Congratulations to Annapolis Royal for both winning the International Challenge, and also for working together as a community to help keep their part of the Annapolis Valley beautiful.

Kentville Goes Idle Free

Kentville has now become the first municipality in the Maritimes to pass a bylaw which makes it illegal to leave your vehicle idling.

This is Kentville's way to help combat global warming, and to do their part to educate the population about this issue. The bylaw does carry with it fines ranging from $150 to $10 000.

The law seems to be quite reasonable having exceptions for things like emergency vehicles among others. It also allows for the use of heat to help clear windows when they may be covered with ice.

In general this seems to be a good idea. Not only will it do a part in help keeping our Annapolis Valley beautiful, but it will also help save some money in gas costs. Another good thing about this is that it will force people to think about things they normally take for granted, which hopefully will even help outside of Kentville's boundaries.
