Official Opening of Miner Marsh

Posted On: Thu. Aug. 12 2010

Miner Marsh was officially opened tonight, August 12, 2010. The piece of land was purchased by Ducks Unlimited Canada in 1997 and the plans for the park have been in the works since around 2004.

The property is right downtown Kentville behind the municipal building and features 1.5 km of trials around the wetlands. One of the main landmarks in the Park is a bridge which was put in place over the Cornwallis River.

Miner Marsh BridgeAlong the trails there are benches and picnic tables to stop along the way and enjoy the scenery which is beautiful.

The plans for the park will make the it a recreational area, but also an educational tool. With schools taking trips to learn about the wildlife and the importance of preserving these sorts of habitats. It will also be used by groups like Scouts.

Tonight was my first visit to the park and I'm quite impressed with the area and how close it is to the downtown area. It will make a great area for people to take a walk on their lunch break or any time.

It was so nice to hear that my father's (Robert Miner's)marshland has now been made into a park. I use to go with my father when I was a small boy from our farm in Gaspereau to take his cattle to graze there for the summer. I believe that he inherited the land from his mother's side of the family. His mother was Agnes Johnston. The oak cemetery to the Wickwire House belonged originally to Agnes' ancestors "The Pecks." I believe that my father sold the marsh property in the early 60's.
